Love does not boast, it is not proud. this verse is all about bragging. we, as Christians, are not to brag. now I am sure this isn’t saying we can’t partake in some joking and trash talk with friends while playing basketball or video games. but when brag about our greatness and mean it, or think of ourselves as superior for some reason… we are not living in love. How do we deal with the fact that we live in a VERY boastful culture, while our faith stresses humility? How do we live with the people we live with, play the sports we play, have the talents we have and not become proud or boastful? Looking for posters here… comments anyone? Anyone??

“If we give away all we have, while we withhold the heart from God, it will not profit.”

Love does not envy… Rudy talked about the ill will (wish for harm) that is associated with envy, which makes it a step worse than plain old jealously. the word used here for envy means: “to burn with zeal, to be heated or to boil with envy, hatred, anger.” Sounds pretty intense… more than just wanting something you don’t have. it sounds like it is bordering on obsession! the Church (the body of believers, not a physical building) in Corinth was stuggling with comparing people to each other… even comparing Paul to his fellow missionary Apollos! Paul is clear… do not compare. all are different, all are parts of one Body. love does not envy. do you have any advice on ways to keep from being envious - perhaps some of our Thailand Team has something to say?

Love is kind… Paul is speaking of a kindness that is important. a kindness that is bigger than polite courtesy, deeper than surface thoughtfulness. it is a self-sacrificing kindness, a kindness that is worthy of being an explanation of “how to love as Christ did.” the Greekword is chresteuomai and this is the only time it is used in the whole New Testament and it means to “make yourself mild” showing that it is a decision. maybe the people in Corinth weren’t being nice :) Seriously, though… this is a kindness that is a choice, not a personality type. everyone of us can be kind, no matter what our personality is. you and I need to CHOOSE to be kind. can you give any examples of this sort of kindness from your own experience? maybe someone who was nice to you when you didn’t deserve it?

Love is patient… this is where Paul starts this conversation with these new believers in this metropolitan city. as Chapter 12 ends, Paul says “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it… And now I will show you the most excellent way.” what do you think it means to lie out: Love is patient, or as the Message puts it, Love never gives up? how do we act on what we say we believe about being patient? Moses spoke about the words of the Lord being our lives, not just words. so we need to mean what we say as we memorize “love is patient…” can you give any examples from your own experience about how love is patient - maybe how someone has shown you love through their patience?
