Egypt: The Countdown Begins

Egypt 2006 June 12th, 2006 by admin

Hello! In just a mere six days I will be traveling to Cairo, Egypt. Once there I will embark on a two-month journey of sand, sun, and discovery working with Gene and Brenda Lyons (not their real names) and living with two Latin American women. I am unable to express myself completely in this blog for security reasons, but I will try to provide as detailed an account as possible of my experience, including photos. Rest assured, a full report will be made upon my return.

I am very excited and feel very privileged to have this opportunity. As a lover of international travel, I am looking forward to combining work and play in Egypt this summer. I am not sure what my itinerary will entail but I am planning on working with children, teaching conversational English, and even taking a beginning Arabic language course. There will also be time to take in some of the wonders of Egyptian culture and civilization including the great pyramids and the Nile river. Here is a little information about Egypt to give a little context.

Egypt is located in Northeast Africa and shares borders with the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, Libya, Sudan, and the Gaza Strip. It is about three times the size of New Mexico. It has the largest growing population in the Arab world, growing at about a rate of 1.75% a year. It is predominantly Sunni and Arabic is the official language. It’s main cities are Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan, and many Egyptians spend the summer in Alexandria to escape the intense heat of the summer.

And with that, I’ll leave you until I have further information, or until I arrive, whichever comes first!

Please keep me in your thoughts as I make my final preparations. Specifically, I just came down with a cold which I am hoping to fight off before I leave. Also, I am finishing up final exams and preparing for graduation on Saturday. And then on Sunday the trip begins!
